Week Eight: Documentary Development

I had a lot of fun again this week, but spent a lot more time working on my documentary than recreation. After a certain point, a vacation lifestyle of going somewhere new or going out every day becomes unsustainable. At the end of my second month here I feel settled in and comfortable with a routine I chose for myself. Pretty much every day I get up around 8am, do some yoga, have a coffee and breakfast, then drive over to my boss’s house to outline, plan, and edit my documentary.

I mapped out all of the power plants in the state this week, and am planning on visiting at least one of each type if not all of them. Within the Western Cape, there’s 21 power plants: 9 wind, 5 solar, 3 coal, 2 hydroelectric, and the only nuclear power plant on the continent. These power stations give me a lot to work with in terms of my documentary. This week I started by visiting the closest – the Acacia coal power plant – where I created a short time lapse.

After contacting the government program 110% Green, I was able to secure and film my first interview ever this week as well. I got to speak to the Head of the Department of Local Government Dr. Hildegrade Fast, who is currently overseeing the Department of Economic Development and Tourism’s renewable energy initiative the Energy Security Game Changer. I’ll leave the details of the interview to the film, but it feel great to be building up some reputable sources.

In regards to adventure, I had two amazing experiences this week. First, VAC took us to hike up to Elephant’s Eye Cave in the Silvermine recreation area. It’s a short walk along the crest of mountains overlooking the southeast Cape Town area up to a massive cave. A group of about 15 of us made our way up mid-Friday before descending back to the Silvermine dam for a dip in the water. On Saturday, I attended my first electronic music festival with Jim and his landlord/friend Chris. We drove down along the coast and spent the entire evening as well as most of the night listening to music and jamming under a lighthouse. As it got darker, the venue’s lights were complimented by the lighthouse’s swinging beam and made for an unreal aesthetic.
