Week Nine: Sailboats and Beach Houses

I spent half of my time relaxing and staying in this week, but the other half was (of course) another adventure. Between birthday parties, VAC activities, and beach house retreats, I continued to explore my way around the cape. Work has continued to be both engaging and self-driven. I’ve continued filming South African land and cityscapes and am working on lining up new interviews. I have been speaking to Green Cape, a local green energy non-profit, about leads for people to speak to and where to get footage. They have worked closely with US State Department in the past, which has actually visited the Western Cape to document its renewable energy initiatives. I may even be able to use some of their footage.

I’ve been cooking a lot more. Between tacos at work, hosting another braai, and beach-side brunches I’ve been saving a lot of money while still enjoying myself. Food is so cheap here relative to the U.S. that I often forget to feed myself, instead relying on the slew of restaurants around Observatory.

Michael, Tom, and I went to a movie (Trainspotting 2) at the Waterfront one night. It’s a good movie, definitely worth a watch. Check out the first one before hand though, it’s a classic. Afterwards we had dinner at Quay Four on the water before Tom and I went back to Obs to hang with some friends.

On Friday VAC took us on a sailboat ride around Table Bay on The Spirit of Victoria. It was just about the same ride we went on during the Pirate Boat, but this ride was quite a bit more personal and less hokey. The views looking back at the city from the bay are amazing, it’s cool to get a perspective of the city out at sea with Table Mountain looming.

Saturday I hit the road with Jim and Chelsea toward Simon’s Town. Chelsea and Andi’s coworker owns a beach house down there and let us stay in it for the weekend at R200 a night (about $15). We made it there in the early afternoon and spent most of the day relaxing, mixing drinks, and basking in the sun. About an hour before sunset we went down to the beach and watched the sea light up. I tried to make two time lapses (one on my camera and one on my phone), but both failed because I ran out of memory. We returned to the house after dark to make dinner and fell asleep to crashing waves.

  1. Dude that beach house looks so awesome. I spent a weekend with my buddie from Berlin in Sweden at the lake. Never had more fun.

  2. I am behind at looking at these wonderful blogs! I so enjoyed these pics. I look forward to evenings at the waterfront and seeing the promenade. I also want to go out on a boat tour/ride! Love to you!
